Pre-natal Massage: What to Do in the First 48 Hours
By Wholistic Essence | August 12, 2026
Quick rule to remember: After your prenatal massage, keep it simple for 24 to 48 hours. Hydrate, rest, and skip hot tubs, saunas, and hard workouts so your body can hold onto that relief and calm feeling.
A lot of our regulars come in because they’re feeling stressed and want real relief, not just a quick “feel good” moment. Prenatal massage is one of our favorite ways to support expecting moms in San Pedro, especially when your body feels like it’s carrying everything in your shoulders, hips, and low back.
This guide is your first 48 hours, spelled out. If you’re balancing long shifts, commute fatigue, or plans down by the harbor in Downtown and Central San Pedro, these steps keep you comfortable without overthinking it.
The first 2 hours after prenatal massage: hydrate, move slowly, then keep it calm
Right after your session, your nervous system is usually in a softer gear. That’s a good thing, but it’s also why we want you to take your time getting up.
Before you leave our studio
- Sit up slowly and pause for a few breaths.
- Sip water. Don’t chug it, just steady sips.
- Use the bathroom before you hit the road, especially if you’re heading back toward Wilmington, Harbor City, Lomita, Torrance, or Rancho Palos Verdes.
If you’re in that “floaty” post-massage state, grab a light snack. Something simple often helps if your blood sugar dips. And please keep your plans mellow for the rest of the day. A short, easy walk is fine. Heavy lifting, intense workouts, and long errands tend to bring the tension right back.
San Pedro heat tip: If you’re out around the waterfront in summer, treat hydration like part of your aftercare. Coastal sun and harbor activities dehydrate you faster than you think, and dehydration can make you feel headachy or crampy.
Last piece for the first day: skip alcohol and avoid a heavy meal right after. Your body’s already processing the work we did, and simple food usually sits better.
Your 24 to 48 hour plan: rest, light walking, and no hot tubs or saunas
Most of the “I feel off after a massage” moments come from doing too much too soon. We generally recommend you treat the next 24 to 48 hours like recovery time.
Do this
- Prioritize sleep and breaks. Your body does its best reset work when you rest.
- Keep movement gentle. Light walking is usually perfect.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothes so nothing digs into your belly, hips, or ribcage.
Avoid this
- Hot tubs, saunas, long hot showers, tanning beds, and anything that overheats you.
- Hard cardio, heavy lifting, or “pushing through” soreness.
- Big swings in temperature, especially if you’re heading from AC straight into coastal sun.
And keep an eye on how you feel. Mild soreness can happen, especially if we worked into stubborn tight spots. But severe pain, unusual bleeding, severe dizziness, or decreased fetal movement is not something to wait on. If any of that shows up, reach out to your care provider promptly.
The first week: keeping the “calm baseline” going between sessions
One thing we hear a lot about our bodywork is that it doesn’t feel rushed or forced. That matters for pregnancy and massage. The goal isn’t to “power through” tightness. It’s to help your body soften, then stay softer.
For the next week, simple habits work best. Keep walking. Keep your water intake steady. If your schedule is packed, even 10 minutes of easy movement tends to keep your hips and low back happier than doing nothing all day and then trying to catch up.
If you’re planning beach or boat time: swimming or being out on the water is often fine if you feel good, but be smart about sun and heat. Bring water, take breaks, and don’t turn your day into an endurance event right after your massage.
If you’re a port shift worker or you commute through Downtown and Central San Pedro, early morning or evening appointments usually make aftercare easier. You can go home, eat something light, and get your feet up instead of jumping straight back into the hustle.
Oils, lotions, and perineal massage: what we keep simple on purpose
After a prenatal massage, your skin can be a little more reactive than usual. We suggest you keep products basic for a day or two. If you already know certain scents or essential oils bother you, avoid them after your session.
Stick with a gentle, fragrance-light moisturizer. No “warming” creams. No numbing products. And skip anything that makes your skin tingle or flush, especially if you’re also dealing with coastal heat.
A quick note on perineal massage
Perineal massage is a separate at-home practice some expecting parents ask about. If it’s on your mind, talk with your care team first so you’re getting timing and technique guidance that fits your pregnancy. If you want, let us know at your next maternity massage and we’ll help you think through comfort positions and relaxation breathing that support any approved home routine.
When to reach out after a prenatal massage in San Pedro (and when it’s urgent)
“From the moment you walk in, there is a genuine sense of care, calm, and professionalism that immediately puts you at ease.”
one of our long-time clients
That’s the vibe we keep on purpose. If something feels “not quite right” after your prenatal massage, we want you to tell us. Most of the time it’s a small adjustment for next session, like pressure, positioning, or how we support your hips and shoulders.
Call your care provider promptly if you have severe dizziness, unusual bleeding, severe pain, or a decrease in fetal movement.
If you’re ready to keep the relief going, we’re happy to help you plan your next prenatal massage around your energy levels and your schedule. A lot of our clients in San Pedro and the surrounding harbor cities like having something on the calendar that keeps stress lower week to week.
